The Future of Asset Integrity: NDT Powered by Virtual Reality

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) plays a critical role in improving the integrity and safety of assets across industries such as oil and gas, aerospace, energy, maritime, offshore, and construction. As traditional methods are supported with technological advancements, Virtual Reality (VR) is emerging as a transformative tool in the NDT sector. This paper explores the role of VR into asset integrity management, highlighting the advantages of enhanced training, improved safety, increased inspection accuracy, boosted operational efficiencies, and reduced costs. VR driven immersive simulation environments provide inspectors with realistic training opportunities without risks to physical assets or personnel. Additionally, the combination of VR with 3D scan point cloud data allows experts to conduct remote inspections, assessing hard-to-reach areas with precision. Enhanced data visualization through interactive 3D models and digital twins improves decision-making, while collaborative VR platforms allow geographically dispersed teams to participate in real-time diagnostics. Despite its benefits, the adoption of VR in NDT faces challenges such as high initial investment, technical complexity and need for standardized practices. However, advancements in AI-driven flaw detection, augmented reality overlays and digital twin technologies indicate a promising future for its applications. This study proves that VR will play a significant role in the future of asset integrity management, leading to safer and more efficient NDT practices. By addressing current barriers, industries can utilise VR to provide sustainable and reliable asset integrity solutions.
