Environmental assessment of atmospheric pollution and cumulative risks to the health of the city Cherkasy

Year: 2025
Type: article
Environmental assessment of atmospheric pollution and cumulative risks to the health of the city Cherkasy.Zhytska L., Khomenko O., Papach V., Vydra N.The article considers topical issues of air pollution safety and the role of motor vehicles in carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks to the health of the population of Cherkasy. It is substantiated that air pollution and the accumulation of contaminants in the air, especially high levels of SO 2 , NO 2 , CH 2 O, CO and PAH, causes a wide range of respiratory health problems and mortality from respiratory diseases. The paper uses the results of personal monitoring of atmospheric pollution in the city, which showed an excess of concentrations of some toxicants in 25-50% of the samples taken. It is noted that anthropogenic pollution of the surface layer with carcinogenic compounds, in particular, PAH in certain areas of the city's urban areas, can cause the development of neoplasms, immunosuppressive conditions of the body, accelerate mutagenic changes and lead to a reduction in human life expectancy. The calculations based on the methodology «Assessment of carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks to public health from chemical air pollution» show that conditions are being created for the formation of high cumulative health risks. There is also a clear trend towards an increase in the incidence of respiratory and allergic diseases and mutagenic tumors. It is emphasized that the existing pollution control system is imperfect, and violation of the conditions for compliance with the safety of crankcase emissions containing PAH and other toxic substances in the current conditions poses a threat to environmental safety. This situation requires the establishment of strict rules and a clear organization of a system to monitor compliance with them. The article highlights the areas of practical application of the research results.
