Abstract: Jan Sjövall, one of the pioneers of modern bile acid and steroid analysis passed away on May 2, 2024, at the age of 95. Jan spent most of his career in the Department of Physiological Chemistry at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden, having moved from Lund as part of Sune Bergström's group in 1958. Jan was a very fine golfer, regularly representing Sweden in age group competitions, and in 1948, while studying medicine in Lund, met Sune Bergström on his local golf course. Sune Bergström was a recently appointed professor at Lund University and Jan joined Bergström's group in 1949 to begin his long career studying bile acids.
