Abstract: Balfourodendron riedelianum wood (known as pau-marfim in Portuguese) is moderately heavy and well-suited for use in civil construction, carpentry, and panel production, characteristics that indicate the potential of this species for commercial plantations. However, studies on the quality of B. riedelianum wood from plantation areas are still incipient. Therefore, this work aims to determine the physico-chemical properties of B. riedelianum wood whose seeds originated from three different places in Brazil: the first in Alvorada do Sul, PR, the second from Gália, SP, and the third from Bauru, also SP. Despite the seed origin, all studied trees were planted in Luiz Antônio, SP. After 36 years of planting, a total of 60 trees (20 from each origin/provenance) were felled. From each felled tree, a 1-meter-long log was removed from its base, and samples were collected to evaluate the following physico-chemical and mechanical properties of the wood: basic density, apparent density, volumetric shrinkage, anisotropy coefficient, compressive strength parallel to the fibers, shear strength parallel to the fibers, modulus of rupture, and modulus of elasticity in static bending. None of the evaluated parameters were significantly affected by the origin of the seeds. Although no significant differences in the wood properties/parameters were observed among the studied origins, when selecting B. riedelianum trees for use as timber, these traits/parameters can be important when aiming to produce wood products that require minimal variability of these properties based on the desired wood quality.
