The Expanding Canvas: Unveiling the Dynamics of Creativity

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Welcome to Leonardo Journal 58, No. 3, in which we delve into the ever-evolving landscape of creativity. This issue’s focus section, “Understanding Creativity,” provides a multifaceted exploration of this fundamental human capacity, examining its manifestations across art, technology, language, and collaborative practice. We aim to move beyond simplistic definitions, engaging with the complex interplay of imagination, tools, cultural contexts, and the very act of making. The articles within this issue challenge us to reconsider the nature of creativity in a world increasingly shaped by computation. Xiaoqiao Li et al.’s “Reimagining Creativity: Gaussian Splatting as an Organological Extension of Imagination in Artistic Processes” offers a groundbreaking perspective. By integrating Yuk Hui’s concept of artificial imagination and Bernard Stiegler’s organology, Li probes how computational tools, specifically Gaussian splatting, can extend and augment the creative process. The Choi Hung Estate project serves as a compelling case study, demonstrating how this technology fosters the creation of dynamic, interactive digital artworks that can tap into collective memory. This article encourages us to think beyond the limitations of computation, urging a philosophical regrounding that embraces the organological potential of these powerful tools.Gaëtan Henry’s “Wabi-Sabi in Virtual Reality Sketching: Toward a Digital Creator’s Posture Change” offers a contrasting but equally insightful perspective, considering sustainability and digital artistic practice. Henry et al. explore the potential of the Japanese concept of Wabi-Sabi, emphasizing impermanence and the acceptance of imperfection, within the context of virtual reality sketching. The authors observe that intentionally limiting digital tools and embracing constraints causes participants’ creative processes to shift, mirroring a more mindful, sustainable approach. This innovative intersection of tradition and technology provides a concrete pathway for integrating sustainable values into the tools and practices of digital artists.Paula Leverage’s “Creative Etymologies: A Cross-Disciplinary Analysis of Creativity” shifts our attention to the very building blocks of expression, as found in language. Leverage utilizes insights from neuroscience, diachronic linguistics, and literary studies to analyze the intricate associative and derivative patterns that fuel linguistic creativity. She argues that these patterns not only generate new words but also open entirely new avenues of perception and expression. The article raises fascinating questions about how language as a shared human endeavor reflects and catalyzes the creative process, offering potential applications for art, writing, and scientific exploration.Beyond the specific articles, this issue embodies the spirit of interdisciplinary collaboration, a cornerstone of Leonardo’s mission. This is particularly evident in our “Showcase” of creative practices emerging from the Leonardo@Djerassi program. This unique residency brings together artists and scientists, fostering a dynamic environment where the boundaries of art and science are constantly questioned and reimagined. The selected artists and scientists demonstrate the rich potential of cross-pollination between diverse fields. Our “Work Bench” section, featuring articles written by creative practitioners, further enriches our understanding of creativity by offering intimate insights into individual cross-disciplinary processes. This, alongside the contributions in “Contemporary Scholarship,” rounds out a comprehensive exploration of creativity in theory and practice.Leonardo 58, No. 3 is a call to expand the canvas of our understanding. It invites us to embrace new technologies, to learn from diverse cultural perspectives, and to appreciate the dynamic interplay between human imagination and the world around us. We hope this issue will inspire new avenues of thought and creation, pushing the boundaries of what is possible and furthering our collective journey toward a deeper understanding of the creative impulse.
