Making Saints in a “Glocal” Religion: Practices of Holiness in Early Modern Catholicism, edited by Birgit Emich, Daniel Sidler, Samuel Weber, and Christian Windler
Year: 2025
Type: book-review
Abstract: Whereas men are to cultivate courage and initiative, women are to cultivate humility and obedience. On the other hand, these Jesuit directors urge the women they direct to undertake strenuous volunteer work in the church's schools, hospitals, welfare agencies, and charities. They are to take a central role in the work of a church that no longer enjoys the largess of a sympathetic state and acquire the skills to perform this work well. The older clerical fascination with the unique "spiritual gifts" of women had ceded to an activist commitment to form the modern dame oeuvres in the nineteenth century.
