Abstract: This review investigates the atomic-level understanding of cementitious materials, highlighting the significance of studying cement at this scale. It examines the atomic structures of essential phases like C-S-H, C3S, C2S, C3A, and C4AF, focusing on crystal structures and defects. The interactions at the atomic scale, particularly hydration reactions and C-S-H formation, are analysed alongside the influence of temperature and pressure. The study emphasizes the critical role of water molecules in these processes, offering insights into the fundamental behaviour and properties of cement.
