A Study on Product Design of Electric Surfboards Applying Emotional Design

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The growing popularity of water sports and the demand for modern, sustainable, and userfriendly equipment have led to the development of electric surfboards. These innovative devices offer unique features, such as electric propulsion and intelligent controls, that expand the accessibility of surfing to a broader audience. However, current designs often fail to address user preferences for emotional appeal and functionality fully. To bridge this gap, this study aims to optimize the form design of electric surfboards by employing Kansei Engineering (KE) and the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP).These methodologies allow for a deeper understanding of user emotional needs and a systematic approach to decision-making in design. The research process involves constructing a sample space of existing products, collecting and clustering emotional image words to identify key emotional demands, and quantitatively using the AHP model to evaluate the importance of various design elements. The study integrates these findings into a comprehensive design proposal combining innovative aesthetics, advanced technology, and traditional design motifs, ensuring emotional resonance and practical usability. The proposed design includes modular components, intelligent balancing systems, and a blend of modern and classic visual elements, catering to diverse user requirements. The results demonstrate that integrating KE and AHP methodologies enhances the effectiveness of design decision-making and ensures a balanced approach to emotional and functional considerations. This study provides a theoretical foundation for improving the market competitiveness of electric surfboards but also offers valuable insights into the emotional design of other marine sports equipment. The findings contribute to the broader field of product design by illustrating how usercentered methodologies can drive innovation and market success.
