3D bioprinting for facial reconstruction: Advances and challenges
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: - Facial reconstruction presents significant challenges due to the complexity of soft and hard tissue integration. Traditional surgical approaches, including autografts and alloplastic implants, often face limitations such as donor site morbidity, immune rejection, and inadequate functional restoration. The emergence of 3D bioprinting has revolutionized regenerative medicine by enabling the fabrication of patient-specific, bioengineered constructs that closely mimic native tissue architecture. This review explores recent advancements in 3D bioprinting for facial reconstruction, focusing on bone, cartilage, and soft tissue regeneration. Key challenges—including biomaterial limitations, vascularization, and clinical translation—are critically examined. Additionally, we discuss ongoing clinical applications and future directions, including AI integration and gene-editing technologies. As research progresses, 3D bioprinting holds immense promise for transforming personalized facial reconstruction, offering improved aesthetic and functional outcomes.
