The Role of the Pasteur Institute of Nha Trang in the Medical and Epidemiological Network of Indochina (1895-1945)

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Founded in 1895 by Alexandre Yersin, the Pasteur Institute of Nha Trang played a pivotal role in the colonial medical and epidemiological network in Indochina. With its functions in microbiological research, vaccine production, and medical training, the Institute served not only scientific purposes but also operated as a soft power instrument of the French colonial administration. Drawing on the analysis of historical sources, this article elucidates the scientific, political, and social roles of the Institute, thereby contributing to a deeper understanding of the legacy and inherent contradictions of colonial medicine during the period from 1895 to 1945.
