Abstract: The relevance of the study is due to several factors, including the need to improve the professional training of future coaches to ensure effective sports selection in the context of reforming the sports sector. The first reason is insufficient financial support for sports infrastructure, which limits the opportunities for involving children in sports, as well as the lack of an effective sports selection system that would take into account the latest technologies and modern requirements. The second reason is that Ukraine lags far behind European countries in terms of the level of physical activity among the population, which requires the development of new approaches to training professionals capable of providing high-quality sports selection and orientation. The purpose of the article is to analyze the problems and challenges in the process of reorganizing the management system in the field of sports in Ukraine, to substantiate the special competencies of future coaches to carry out sports selection in their professional activities. The study showed that the system of sports selection in Ukraine includes several stages, in particular at the level of youth categories, with the main link in children's and youth sports schools. The Ukrainian federations of the respective sports are responsible for selecting athletes for professional teams and national teams. Selection is based on tests of physical fitness, special abilities and psychological qualities. The reorganization of sports management has its pros and cons, in particular, the club system will increase the number of sports organizations and expand the range of sports, but will increase competition between clubs, cause more rigorous selection of athletes and difficulties for financially vulnerable groups of the population. Universities, as centers for the formation of future sports coaches, should respond promptly to reforms in the sports organization system. By updating their educational programs, introducing an interdisciplinary approach, and working closely with potential employers and coaches, universities should provide high-quality training for professionals who will meet new challenges and contribute to the development of Ukrainian sport at all levels. Substantiated (diagnostic, methodological, psychological and pedagogical, organizational and managerial, socio-ethical, technological) special competencies are the basis for the formation of qualified coaches who are able to effectively carry out sports selection and ensure the comprehensive development of young athletes, taking into account the individual characteristics of each.
