Specifics of temporality in historical narratives about the Great Silk Road

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The article written from the perspective of narratology and communicative linguistics, focuses on the consideration of temporality as one of the constitutive features of historical narrative. The relevance of the study is driven by the need to highlight the linguistic parameters of historical narrative, which have not yet been the subject of comprehensive analysis. The aim of the study is to examine the concept of temporality and the linguistic means of its expression in historical narrative. The research material consists of 113 narratives about the Great Silk Road in Chinese, Russian, and English. These narratives were chosen as the object of analysis due to the significant role the Great Silk Road plays in human history, and the modern appeal to it through China's "Belt and Road Initiative" project, which fosters an understanding of historical continuity and the dynamic nature of this phenomenon. The research methods employed in the study are narrative, definitional, contextual, and stylistic analyses, as well as elements of content analysis. The research brings us to the conclusion that markers of temporality may include grammatical and lexical linguistic means (such as verb tense forms in English and Russian, the suffix 了, temporal adverbs, context, and word order in Chinese), as well as precedent phenomena, intertextuality, and presuppositions
