A case study on Plasmodium falciparum malaria: Diagnosis and Ayurvedic therapeutic management

Year: 2025
Type: article
Study design: Case Report
Abstract: Background: Plasmodium falciparum malaria is a life-threatening parasitic disease that manifests with classical symptoms like high-grade fever, chills, rigors, and anemia. While modern antimalarial drugs offer rapid parasitic clearance, Ayurveda provides a holistic, immunomodulatory, and detoxifying approach that enhances systemic recovery and prevents recurrence. Case Summary: A 28-year-old male presented with classical signs of Vishama Jvara—intermittent fever, chills, fatigue, and dark urine. Peripheral blood smear and rapid diagnostic tests confirmed Plasmodium falciparum infection. The patient was managed with classical Ayurvedic formulations including Sudarshan Churna, Guduchi Ghana Vati, Triphala Kashaya, and Mritunjaya Rasa for Jvara along with Deepana-Pachana and Rasayana therapy. Supportive care included adequate hydration and dietetic modifications. Clinical improvement was observed within 3 days, with complete resolution by day 7. Follow-up after two weeks showed no recurrence. Conclusion: This case illustrates the relevance of Ayurvedic interventions in the comprehensive management of Plasmodium falciparum malaria. Ayurvedic formulations not only alleviate symptoms but also strengthen immunity, correct Agni, and support convalescence. Integrative care models combining classical diagnostics with Ayurvedic therapeutics may provide sustainable solutions in endemic regions.
