Stochastic Simulation of the Halabja 7.3 Mw Earthquake at Darbandikhan Dam Broadband Station

Type: article
Abstract: The collision between the Arabian and Eurasian tectonic plates poses significant seismic hazards to the Zagros region, highlighting the need for detailed assessments of critical infrastructure. This study simulates the ground motion of the Mw 7.3, 2017 Halabja earthquake using a stochastic approach at a broadband station located close to Darbandikhan Dam. The key parameters derived from site-specific seismic records and literature include medium's attenuation (Q = 88. f1.02), site amplification by deploying the H/V spectral ratio and high-frequency diminution factor κ-values (κv =0.0531 and κh =0.0717). Stochastic-Method SIMulation point source software was used to validate stochastic simulation parameters. The simulated Peak Ground Acceleration, Fourier Amplitude Spectrum, and Pseudo Spectral Acceleration showed a strong agreement with the observed records. These parameters were subsequently employed in EXSIM software, which accounts for source area extent and mechanism. The simulated Peak Ground Acceleration of 118.62 cm/s² and 5%-damped Pseudo-Spectral Acceleration closely align with Ground Motion Prediction Equations, further validating the adopted models. This work establishes a reliable framework for simulating major seismic events in data-scarce regions and underscores the critical role of local parameters in reducing uncertainty. The simulated time histories provide essential input for dynamic analyses of the Darbandikhan Dam, enhancing our understanding of its seismic performance during potential future earthquakes.
