Human Rights in a World of Surveillance: Managing Privacy and Security Concerns

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The issue of how security needs and individual privacy combine has been under heavy scrutiny in recent times as the fast-moving age of technology marches on. This abstract considers how the development and occupation of space by different technologies penetrate the use of their place as a right or concept to guarantee infringing onto someone's human rights. It has been such that surveillance serves for the purpose of security in governments and corporations, bringing the dilemma to the forefront in the areas of privacy violations, data breaches, and abuse of power. This abstract elaborates almost exclusively on the areas of modification of law and ethics with regard to surveillance, indicating contentious issues and cross-cultural perspectives on that context. Among others, the fundamental human rights affected by these developments include freedom of expression, privacy, and assembly. This abstract seeks to clarify the evolving dynamic that characterizes the contemporary discussion developed so far through the following channels-historical case studies, emerging technologies, or global initiatives to offer a good balance between security and privacy. In the end, this abstract seeks a clear and broad-based dialogue that will stand the test of time concerning shaping responsible surveillance policies that will be at once respectful of individual rights and uphold the principles of a free and democratic society.
