Demand Analysis of Sea Transportation in North Sulawesi

Year: 2025
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: Ship operations in Makalehi are frequently disrupted due to unfavorable weather condition. Disruptive high waves often made the berth of the ship nearly impossible. The establishment of a new ferry port at different side of the island could resolve these issues. This study aims to explore the ferry demand potential of Makalehi Island which is a vital step in port planning. Survey was conducted to collect trip information from respondents, which was then grouped according to their professions and the cargo traffic volume will be estimated based on the shipments data. The traffic potential for the initial year as well as for future will be estimated. The results show that among all professions, salarymen have the highest sea travel frequency, averaging 8.13 trips per month, while fishermen have the lowest, with just 3.05 trips monthly. The potential passenger volume is estimated as high as 26,130 departures, while the potential cargo volume is 423 tons per year.
