Cultural, Family, and Value Influences on Career Planning Among Chinese Students in Thailand
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This qualitative study explores how cultural expectations, family influence, personal values, and external supports shape the career planning of Chinese students studying in Thailand. Structured interviews were conducted with 33 Chinese students from universities in Bangkok and Nakhon Pathom, and thematic analysis was applied to identify key patterns. Findings reveal a dynamic interplay between traditional and emerging values. Stability and job security remain important career ideals, yet many students increasingly prioritize independence, creativity, work-life balance, and global career opportunities. Family and cultural expectations continue to exert significant influence, particularly regarding career types and the decision to return to China. However, pragmatic considerations such as career prospects and personal well-being increasingly shape students’ final decisions. A new idea is suggested that combines cultural factors and outside help into the Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT) framework, giving a better understanding of how international students plan their careers based on their culture. Practically, the study makes the case for universities and employers to provide flexible, globally oriented support systems that align with evolving career aspirations among Chinese international students.
