Tracking Tourism Waves: Insights from Automatic Identification System (AIS) Data on Maritime–Coastal Activities
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Maritime-coastal tourism is in high demand, but its offerings remain limited to a few activities. Some of these activities require no specific skills or certifications, while others do. This research uses automatic identification system (AIS) data from vessels operated by tour companies along the Algarve's southern coast to monitor and categorize these activities non-intrusively. The findings reveal a strong seasonal pattern, with significant activity in the summer months compared to winter. The study provides valuable insights into the management of motorized nautical activities near the coast, contributing to more informed and effective tourism regulation and planning.
