Thecadinium brassicum sp. nov . (Dinophyceae): a sand-dwelling species from the Atlantic and Mediterranean coast of Spain

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: A new photosynthetic species of Thecadinium, T. brassicum sp. nov. is described from strains obtained from sand samples in NW (Atlantic) and NE (Mediterranean) sites of the Iberian Peninsula. Identification was carried out by morphological (light and scanning electron microscopy), molecular (nuclearencoded small subunit, large subunit and the internal transcribed spacer region of ribosomal DNA), pigment and toxinological analysis on clonal cultures. Morphological and molecular characterization placed T. brassicum sp. nov. as the closest relative to the Thecadinium sensu stricto species, T. kofoidii and T. pseudokofoidii. Thecadinium brassicum has unique smooth postcingular plates with simple pores, small 3’’’, and shows a slight displacement of the cingulum, visible only under SEM. These features set T. brassicum apart from T. kofoidii and T. pseudokofoidii, confirming its status as a separate species within the genus. Pigment composition showed the typical dinoflagellates profile of peridinincontaining plastids. Neither lipophilic nor paralytic shellfish toxins were detected.
