Abstract: Marcel Proust’s novel In Search of Lost Time is the story of a consciousness grappling with the enigma of the world. The “I” of this first-person narrative presents the singular experience of a relationship to beings and things that bears similarities to phenomenological attitude and thought. This novel also illustrates a search for truth and meaning that, in terms of content and form, has certain resemblances to the practice of hypnosis: suspension of the natural attitude, emphasis on the body and sensoriality, use of metaphor, and decompartmentalization of time. This dual parallel opens up a dialogue between these approaches to understanding the human being in situation and confronts phenomenology with a body of empirical data concerning the conditions determining our relationship to the world.
