Evaluation of Poly-(Sorbitol-Co-Citrate Adipate) Properties for Application as Biomaterial

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Objective: This study evaluated the stability and biomedical potential of poly-(sorbitol-co-citrate adipate), focusing on physical, chemical, and microbiological properties. Theoretical Framework: The copolymer's suitability for biomedical use was assessed by investigating its performance and degradation under physiological and stress conditions. Method: Stability was tested in phosphate-buffered saline (pH 7.4) for five days, moisture absorption was measured to assess hygroscopic properties, and antimicrobial activity was tested against Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Results and Discussion: The copolymer lowered medium pH, suggesting residual citric acid release, and showed hydrophilic and acidic characteristics through moisture absorption tests. It did not support yeast growth as a sole carbon source, indicating low nutrient availability and potential antimicrobial properties. Mass loss under nutrient-depleted conditions indicated biodegradability. Research Implications: Results confirm the copolymer's suitability as a biodegradable biomaterial for applications requiring controlled degradation, such as drug delivery systems, temporary implants, or wound dressings. Originality/Value: This study provides key insights into the stability, moisture behavior, and microbial interactions of poly-(sorbitol-co-citrate adipate), contributing to the development of sustainable biomaterials for biomedical applications.
