Spatial multi-criteria play-based analysis for HT-ATES systems across the Swiss Molasse Plateau

Abstract: 1. Abstract Energy storage is one of the main solutions to decarbonize the global energy system. The heating sector covers about 50% of the global energy demand but it is impacted by a mismatch between demand and supply from renewable energy sources. Underground Thermal Energy Storage (UTES) systems can provide solutions by shifting loads seasonally, but accurate understanding and combination of subsurface conditions and surface constraints are required to identify the most suitable sites. This study focusses on a favorability assessment framework for High-Temperature Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage (HT-ATES) systems across the Swiss Molasse Plateau (SMP), based on spatial multi-criteria play-based analysis (SMCPBA). Two main geologic targets (Cenozoic Molasse and Upper Mesozoic) have been evaluated under a play-based perspective and the results have been combined to energy system criteria in order to identify the most promising areas for potential future implementations.
