Abstract: High-Frequency Radar (HFR) systems provide near real-time measurements of surface ocean currents, offering broad and continuous coastal coverage. Supported by CeNCOOS as part of the national U.S. IOOS network, 33 HFR stations across Central and Northern California collect critical data used in applications including search and rescue, maritime navigation, and oil spill response. Data are processed and visualized on the CalOOS Data Portal, with high-resolution coverage in key areas like San Francisco Bay. These systems enhance operational efficiency, reduce emergency response times, and support safer and more informed decision-making along the coast.
