Abstract: NILI LIPHSCHITZ wood and 127 carbonized seeds, were collected from four EB IA areas: (1) Area E (map ref. 108100/120875)excavated by A. Golani (1997; this volume).(2) Area G (map ref. 1085-7/1210)excavated by E. Braun (Braun and Gophna 1995; this volume).(3) Area J (map ref. 1084/1206)-excavated by Y.Y.Baumgarten (1995; this volume).(4) Area F (map ref. 1803-5/1205-7)excavated by H. Khalaily (this volume).A single sample of seeds originated at an EB IB site in the Ashqelon Afridar region which was excavated c. 30 years ago by R. Gophna (1968; map ref. 1806/1212).Samples of 0.5-1.0cu cm of wood were taken for botanical examination. The samples were aspirated in absolute ethyl alcohol, immersed in a celloidin-clove oil solution for 24 hours, rinsed in absolute ethyl alcohol and transfered to 55ºC paraffin for 48 hours.Blocks were then made in paraffin.Cross sections as well as longitudinal, tangential and radial sections, 12 millimicrons thick, were made with a rotary microtome.Identification to the species level was made microscopically from these sections, by comparison with reference sections made from systematically-identified living trees, and with anatomical atlases (Fahn, Werker and Bass 1986;Schweingruber 1990).The seeds were identified morphologically by comparison with recent, systematicallyidentified seeds.Several identified wood and seed samples were radiocarbon dated (Segal and Carmi 1996; Segal and Carmi, pers.comm.; cf.Tables 1, 5).
