Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Psychogeography is a method of spatial analysis deals with the psychological and emotional aspects of geographical space. This study aims to explore the psychological impact of urban spaces of Karachi as depicted in the selected Pakistani fiction. By employing Merlin Coverley’s notion of Psychogeography, this research delves into the spatial and socio-political structure of the metropolis and its direct influence on characters’ perception of life along with their choices and experiences. The psychogeographic concepts of flâneur, dérive and détournement are used to examine the spatial representation of Karachi. The findings reveal that the external environment plays a huge role in shaping the internal psyches of people. The city does not remain a passive setting but rather acts as an active agent that controls the narrative according to its will. This study contributes to the nuanced understanding of dynamic nature of urban spaces and is significant for urban planners and developers. It highlights not only the consequences of inadequate urban planning but advocates for effective infrastructure development to promote equality and peace in the society.
