Study on the interaction between residents’ expenditures of living system and carbon emission efficiency of production system in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei urban agglomeration

Abstract: Enhancing carbon emission efficiency in production systems is crucial for mitigation of carbon emissions as well as energy conservation. However, the demand for goods and services from living systems may push production systems towards unsustainable practices. Those complex interactions in the living and production systems need a deeper understanding to achieve regional synergies that benefit both the economy and the environment. In this regard, identifying key sectors within living and production systems becomes paramount because those key residents’ expenditures and production sectors’ carbon emission efficiency have significant impacts with each other. This study applied fuzzy cognitive map to explore the interactions between production and living systems in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei urban agglomeration. Nine urban residents’ expenditures and seven production sectors’ carbon emission efficiency were calculated. The results of fuzzy cognitive map showed that in Beijing, the highest positive impact of food expenditure is on housing expenditure with a weight of 0.75. Beijing’s food expenditure has the highest positive influence on Tianjin’s residence expenditure (0.97). Unified environmental standards should be developed across Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei to achieve the sustainable development goal.
