The role of financial inclusion in reducing income inequality and poverty in Africa: A macro-level analysis
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Financial inclusion has emerged as a powerful tool for reducing poverty and income inequality, yet its impact across Africa remains uneven and underexplored. This study examines the macro-level effects of financial inclusion on human development and income disparities, providing empirical insights into its transformative potential for Africa’s economic landscape. Panel data was collected from 41 African countries over 4 years (2011, 2014, 2017, and 2022), and the fixed effects estimation technique was performed. The findings highlight that increased financial access enhances the Human Development Index (HDI) by empowering individuals to invest in education, health, and productive economic activities, ultimately reducing poverty. Furthermore, financial inclusion is key in narrowing economic disparities, with gender-differentiated impacts emphasizing the transformative potential of improving women’s financial access. To leverage financial inclusion to reduce poverty and income inequality in Africa, policymakers must adopt a multifaceted approach that addresses both demand and supply-side barriers.
