Type: article
Abstract: Revolutionary movements in modern India have played a pivotal role in shaping the country's history and trajectory. As the Indian subcontinent grappled with colonial rule under the British Empire, various ideological and strategic approaches emerged among those seeking independence. The historical context of colonial India laid the groundwork for the emergence of revolutionary movements. Economic exploitation, political repression, and the spread of radical ideologies fuelled discontent among the Indian populace, paving the way for organised resistance against British rule. By examining this context, we can gain insights into the motivations and strategies of revolutionary actors in modern India. The emergence of revolutionary thinking in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century’s was the result of several internal and external influences working on the minds of the young men. The most vital factor was the growth of the religious revival of the late nineteenth century. Besides this, there were several foreign influences, like the impact of the American War of Independence, the Irish struggle for freedom, the unification of Italy, the lives of Mazzini and Garibaldi, the Japanese victory over Russia and last but not least, the revolution against the Tsarist regime in Russia. All these factors together introduced in the nationalist struggle a strong revolutionary element. This research paper examines the revolutionary movements in modern India, focusing on their ideologies, strategies, historical significance, and lasting impact. Beginning with an exploration of the socio-political context of colonial India. This paper analyses how the revolutionary organisations underwent ideological transformation. Chandra Shekhar Azad and Bhagat Singh were revolutionary freedom fighters; they played a pivotal role in India’s struggle against British colonial rule. Both freedom fighters' fearless patriotism and progressive ideology continue to inspire generations in the fight for justice and equality. This article aims to study in detail the life, ideology, contributions, and enduring legacy of Chandra Shekhar Azad and Bhagat Singh.
