Abstract: The article addresses the impact of cryptocurrencies, especially Bitcoin, on economics and law by challenging traditional concepts of currency. It begins with an analysis of the classical definition of currency and how cryptocurrencies face challenges related to stability of value and universal acceptance. In addition to sharing technical characteristics with traditional currencies, such as scarcity and divisibility, cryptocurrencies are examined for their legal compliance, especially in the Brazilian context where the lack of a clear regulatory framework creates uncertainty for users and investors. The discussion highlights the need for a deeper analysis of the economic, social and legal implications of cryptocurrencies for the global financial system, combining theoretical review with practical analysis and drawing attention to regulatory challenges and global social and economic repercussions. Keywords: Law; Cryptocurrencies; Regulation; Challenges; Legal.
