“to Evaluate Pre and Post Operative Hearing Outcome After Tympanoplasty Using Temporalis Fascia Graft: a Comparative Study”

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The purpose of this prospective comparative study is to evaluate the pre- and post-operative hearing outcomes in patients undergoing type I tympanoplasty with a temporalis fascia graft as well as to assess improvements in pure tone audiometric parameters, graft uptake rates, and overall surgical success. It was conducted on 30 patients diagnosed with CSOM, requiring only type 1 tympanoplasty with a mean age of 32.15 ± 3.60 years. Preoperative and postoperative audiometric assessments were performed at 3 and 6 months, evaluating pure tone average (PTA), air conduction thresholds, and air-bone gap (ABG). Data were analyzed using paired t-tests to determine statistical significance. The study demonstrated significant improvements in hearing outcomes. The mean PTA decreased from 35 ± 3.0 dB preoperatively to 22 ± 2.0 dB at 6 months postoperatively, and the ABG reduced from 20 ± 4.0 dB to 10 ± 2.5 dB (p < 0.001). Additionally, a high graft uptake rate of 93% was achieved with minimal intraoperative complications. The significant audiometric improvements and high graft uptake rate support its use as a reliable treatment option for restoring hearing function.
