Sinner`s circle reloaded : a new concept to understand the real cleaning mechanism of dishwashing

Abstract: In the late 1950s, the German chemist Herbert Sinner suggested an interesting conceptual model to explain the relationships between the mechanisms that control washing. This balance between the variables of chemistry, temperature, mechanics and time during the cleaning process often serves to glimpse in an initial and very didactic way the complexity of the physical-chemical processes that occur in reality. With this work, we have proposed to raise the Sinner's Circle to a level that reveals the truth of these cross-balances and combinations of the four variables. To do so we have carefully studied the effectiveness of soil release in dishwasher cycles, considering different combinations of the variables above, correlated and evaluated by means of machine learning algorithms. What we have found is that the balance between these variables is, as expected, not always linear. We have also found that these balances do not always follow the proportionality proposed by the Sinner's Circle in some regions and under certain conditions established by the other variables and by the properties of the soil.As a result, we have been able to build diagrams that show the real interdependence of the variables. This will help us find better ways to achieve good dishwasher performance, with optimal balances between time, water, energy and detergent that the customer finds favourable for their availability of time, resources and environmental commitment. This knowledge is the gateway to a new generation of smart dishwashers.
