The Importance of Primary Care in India in the Era of Specialized Health Care
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The decline of family physicians worldwide is attributed to financial disincentives, the tendency of patients to bypass primary care and directly consult specialty care, and the lacunae in academic and governmental support. Primary care physicians (PCPs) play a crucial role in holistic community-based healthcare, promoting prevention and early diagnosis of diseases, cost-effective primary-level treatment, and well-coordinated medical care through timely referral. Bypassing PCPs leads to risks such as misdiagnosis, fragmented care, increased costs, and delays in treatment. Despite their importance, primary care faces a global workforce shortage due to lower financial rewards, high workloads, lack of professional prestige, and systemic biases favoring specialization in medical education. Strategies to attract more doctors to primary care include financial incentives, reducing administrative burdens, improving work-life balance, and enhancing career growth opportunities. The Cuban model offers valuable lessons, emphasizing community-centered care, high physician density, preventive healthcare, and government commitment to primary care services. Strengthening primary care is essential for cost-effective, efficient, and equitable healthcare systems, especially in the third world.
