Next-Generation Scoreboarding Techniques Using Python & SystemVerilog Co-models

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The verification landscape for modern System-on-Chip designs has evolved dramatically with increasing hardware complexity, necessitating innovative approaches to overcome the limitations of traditional scoreboarding techniques. This article presents a novel Python-SystemVerilog co-modeling methodology that decouples reference models from simulation kernels while maintaining robust hardware interface monitoring. By leveraging Python's rich ecosystem for implementing complex algorithmic behavior and SystemVerilog's strength in hardware interaction, this article creates a powerful verification paradigm that addresses critical challenges in modern SoC verification. The architecture consists of three primary components: a SystemVerilog UVM testbench for stimulus generation and protocol handling, a communication bridge enabling bidirectional data exchange, and a Python reference model implementing golden behavior. Case studies across AI accelerators, PCIe interfaces, and RISC-V processors demonstrate substantial improvements in development efficiency, debug cycles, and functional coverage. The article proves particularly effective for designs requiring complex mathematical operations, dynamic data structures, or integration with existing software models that would be impractical to implement in SystemVerilog alone, offering a scalable solution for next-generation silicon verification challenges.
