Effects of Finite Soil Pressure on Riverside Subway Stations with Arched Roof-Straight Wall Structure

Type: article
Abstract: ABSTRACT The feasibility of the arched roof-straight wall (ARSW) structure in riverside subway stations necessitates a thorough evaluation of finite soil pressure (FSP), a common occurrence in urban underground structures. Firstly, a mechanical model for FSP was developed to account for the limited soil adjacent to riversides and was validated against field measurements from a riverside subway station. Subsequently, a finite-element structural model was developed to analyze internal forces and deformations in four representative structural schemes under asymmetric loading scenarios. The novel ARSW structure was introduced and thoroughly investigated in this study. Parametric studies examined key factors, including soil pressure type, finite soil width, soil strength parameters (internal friction angle and cohesion), and vertical subgrade modulus, and the effects on the internal force and bending moment distributions within the ARSW structure were analyzed in great detail. The findings indicate the strong applicability of the FSP calculation model and the effectiveness of the ARSW structure in mitigating asymmetric load effects, thereby improving structural stability. This study proposes a theoretical framework for finite soil pressure in riverside conditions, offering critical insights into the design and optimization of underground structures in complex riverbank environments.
