Abstract: The article concerns the analysis of the image of the artist in the works of the ussian writer V. M. Garshin. The main attention is paid to the study of the ways of representation and functions of the artist’s image in the texts of two stories; in addition, the connection between the artist’s image and the biographical context of the writer is considered. The article also raises the question of the role of the artist in the broad sense of the word and the concepts of art in the social and cultural realities of the late 19th century. А detailed analysis of the characteristics and features of the artist’s image in Garshin’s pivotal works, such as “rtists” and “Nadezhda Nikolaevna”, was carried out, emphasizing the depth of the symbolic and ideological content of these images. In addition, the article examines the main conflicts that anу artist faces in the broad sense of the word, as well as some aspects of the methodology and principles of artistic expression. The article contributes to the understanding of the role and place of the image of the artist in the ussian literature of the late 19th century, and also enriches the literary analysis of the works by V.M. Garshin.
