Asymmetric Magnetohydrodynamic Propulsion for Oil–Water Core Annular Flow Through Elbow

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The rupture of oil-water ring at the elbow is still a critical challenge for water annular transportation applications. To ensure oil-water ring passes smoothly through the elbow without rupture, this article proposes an asymmetrical magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) propulsion method to utilize the significant difference between the conductivity of heavy oil and electrolyte solution to achieve accelerating effect on the outer water ring. The differential MHD heavy oil flow model is used to simulate the flow state of oil-water ring in the elbow under the combined action of electric and magnetic fields. The Lorentzian magnetic force provided by MHD field achieves asymmetric acceleration of oil-water rings to homogenize the water ring velocity on the inside and outside of elbows and pushes the deviated oil cores back to the center of the pipeline to repair the water film breakage. Meanwhile, the effects of coil current, electrode plate voltage, and conductivity of electrolyte solution on the morphology and velocity of oil-water ring in the elbow are investigated. In addition, the role of the device in maintaining the morphology under different gravitational is investigated. These results provide references for the design of related devices and the practical application of the delivery of heavy oil.
