Evaluation of Various Adhesion Strategies in Restoring Noncarious Cervical Lesions Extending to Root Surface - A Randomized Controlled Trial
Year: 2025
Type: article
Study designs: Randomized Controlled Trial, Clinical Trial
Abstract: Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the performance of Single Bond Universal adhesive (SBU) in self-etch (SE) and selective enamel etch (SEE) modes when compared to Adper Single Bond 2 (ASB) in etch-and-rinse (E and R) mode for restoring noncarious cervical lesions (NCCLs). Materials and Methods: Twenty-two systemically healthy patients, having 143 teeth with NCCLs, were randomly allocated into three groups: Group I (ASB 2– Etch and Rinse [ASB – E and R]) as control, Group II (Single Bond Universal – Self-Etch [SBU – SE]), and Group III (Single Bond Universal – Selective Enamel Etch [SBU – SEE]). Filtek™ Z350 XT composite was used to restore the NCCLs. The outcome was evaluated based on the modified United States Public Health Service Evaluation System (EXPAND) criteria for anatomic form, marginal adaptation, discoloration, secondary caries, and postoperative sensitivity at the end of 6 months. Results: There was no statistically significant difference between all the three groups in terms of color matching, anatomic form, marginal adaptation, marginal discoloration, secondary caries, and postoperative sensitivity at the end of 6 months. Conclusion: Within the limitations of this randomized controlled trial, all three adhesive strategies demonstrated comparable clinical performance in restoring NCCLs involving the root surface after 6 months, suggesting that single bond universal adhesive can be a viable alternative to conventional etch-and-rinse systems, regardless of the application mode.
