Anti-Social Behaviours: The Struggle to Create Social Value Through Development-Led Archaeology
Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: The development-led, or preventive, system of archaeology is the structural enabler of archaeological work across Europe and beyond. This can mean that economic value is a primary focus for decision making, and this onus on cost-driven work can reduce the capacity for research and public participation. UK archaeological contractors need to satisfy their commercial clients, but the challenge is how we can also embed sustainability for communities or encourage the inclusion of social value into project design and implementation. Often the projects and funders are in opposition to our perception of social value. This paper will take a critical look at some examples from the UK and suggest how we might carefully introduce social value onto projects where the opposite (antisocial value) is being produced.
