Life cycle environmental impact assessment of microalgae biodiesel derived from different processes
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Life cycle assessment(LCA)method was used to evaluate the environmental impact of biodiesel production through two different routes: one using microalgae cultured in freshwater and the other in wastewater. The life cycle model was established using eFootprint life cycle assessment software. The results showed that carbon emissions for producing 1 ton of biodiesel from microalgae cultured in freshwater was -5726.32 kg CO2 eq, while in wastewater it was -6799.59 kg CO2 eq. The entire life cycle of microalgae biodiesel demonstrates significant carbon sequestration effects. The cultivation, harvesting, and drying stages of microalgae were the key contributors to environmental impact throughout the biodiesel production process. Compared to the freshwater cultivation process, the wastewater cultivation method further reduces environmental impact. The use of wastewater treatment for microalgae cultivation presents an effective approach to reduce the environmental burden of biodiesel production, though attention must also be given to electrical energy consumption.
