Keeping the faith, or old wine in new bottles? The Republican Network for Unity and the dilemmas of dissident Irish republicanism
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Twenty-five years after the Good Friday Agreement, why has dissident Irish republicanism endured? What do dissident republicans hope to achieve? And why have their efforts proven so unsuccessful? To explore these questions, this article offers the first detailed analysis of one of the more significant dissident movements, the Republican Network for Unity (RNU). It examines how the RNU emerged at a moment of intra-republican crisis, and how it sought to challenge the hegemony of Sinn Féin as the authentic voice of Irish republicanism, building a platform grounded in ‘left republicanism’ and community activism. Yet this ‘politics of nostalgia’ proved fundamentally limiting and proved no match for the electoral behemoth of Sinn Féin. Pushed to the political margins and struggling for relevance, the RNU was drawn inexorably towards a closer embrace of ‘armed struggle’. This, though, proved to be a cul-de-sac. It raised questions about the RNU’s relationship with ‘Óglaigh na hÉireann’ (ONH), and the resulting tensions were destructive of the group’s internal cohesion. In this way, the history of the RNU highlights the inability of latter-day dissidents to escape either the long shadow of Sinn Féin, or the albatross of physical force methods.
