Revitalising the Bethlehem of Verviers: Interconnection between Intangible Cultural Heritage and Post–Disaster Recovery
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Revitalising intangible cultural heritage is crucial for helping disaster–affected communities recover, fostering social cohesion, and reinforcing local identity. This article examines how the revival of the Bethlehem of Verviers ˗ a 19th century puppet theatre ˗ has contributed to the psychosocial and cultural reconstruction of the Verviers community after the catastrophic floods of 2021. By analysing heritage revitalisation efforts, survey data, and participatory projects, this study explores how intangible cultural heritage acts as both a stabilising force and a catalyst for resilience.
