Abstract: As one of the governing forms of the Mongol Empire in East Asia, the Yuan dynasty marked the first realization of large-scale unified rule over a multi-ethnic territory. Its shipbuilding technology and maritime activities were among the most advanced in the world at the time. Focusing on the Takashima shipwreck site, this study integrates archaeological findings and historical documents to systematically examine the technical achievements of Yuan dynasty ships in terms of structural design, material selection, and large-scale construction. The research shows that Yuan ships widely adopted watertight bulkhead structures, employed scientifically chosen materials, and demonstrated refined craftsmanship, forming a highly standardized system that provided solid support for their large-scale military expeditions and maritime trade. However, the insufficient wave resistance of the hulls and relatively underdeveloped navigational capabilities hindered effective responses to complex sea conditions, becoming key constraints on the implementation of their maritime strategy. Through a comprehensive analysis of representative shipwreck remains and their historical context, this paper reveals the institutional foundations and technical limitations behind Yuan maritime activities, and offers critical reflections on their historical significance and modern relevance.
