The Role of Parliament, Political Parties and Citizens in Shaping India's Democratic Governance
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: India's democratic government is supported three-fold by its people, political parties, and Parliament: three main pillars. Taken all together, they reflect the dynamic core of the largest democracy on Earth. Apart from functioning as a legislative body, the Parliament of India represents public voice. Legislation, speeches, and debates help to capture the hopes and concerns of a nation with diversity. Still, the democratic ideal cannot be reached by the Parliament by itself. Political parties are absolutely essential in linking government with the people. They encourage public opinion, provide a framework for political ideas, and help individuals to confront issues influencing the future of the nation. From this democratic viewpoint, the citizen is not a docile observer. An informed, involved, responsible citizen counts for a good democracy. The first stage is voting; nevertheless, civic involvement goes beyond the ballot; it entails opposing policies, advocating change, holding politicians responsible, and upholding constitutional ideals in daily life. The relationship among three forces is changing right now. Although political parties are under fire for elevating power above policy, parliament routinely answers questions on disturbances and delays. People are simultaneously expressing their thoughts online and via civil society initiatives more and more. This paper looks at the need of Parliament, political parties, and the public to restate their roles and duties in promoting democratic government inclusive, accountable, and ready for the future. Enhancing this trinity requires not just institutional transformation but also support of the democratic values all over India.
