Polycaprolactone ( PCL )/Potato Starch ( PS ) Nanofiber Scaffolds Combined With Carbonate‐Hydroxyapatite ( CHA ) for Bone Tissue Engineering
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: ABSTRACT Combining synthetic and natural polymers offered biological and mechanical advantages for bone tissue engineering. This study aimed to develop nanofiber composite scaffolds based on polycaprolactone (PCL), potato starch (PS), and carbonate hydroxyapatite (CHA) derived from Pokea shellfish. The scaffolds were fabricated using electrospinning, with varying CHA concentrations to evaluate their effect on the structural and biological properties. The addition of CHA reduced the fiber diameter from approximately ~593 to ~384 nm but resulted in decreased mechanical strength. Biomineralization tests confirmed the bioactivity of the scaffolds. The antibacterial test showed a strong inhibition zone of about 11–16 mm for Staphylococcus aureus and 10–15 mm for Porphyromonas gingivalis . Cell viability assays indicated that the scaffolds were biocompatible, with viability exceeding 95%. These findings suggested that PCL/PS/CHA scaffolds had potential for bone regeneration applications.
