Evaluation of Impact of Omicron Variant of COVID-19 Virus on Dentistry in India: A Questionnaire Study
Year: 2025
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: Objective: This study aimed to assess the impact of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 on dentistry in India through a questionnaire-based survey. Methods: Ethical approval was obtained, and a questionnaire was distributed to dentists using Google Forms. The survey collected information on dentists' perspectives, concerns, financial security, and treatment provided during the Omicron wave. Statistical analysis was performed on the collected data. Results: The study included participants from individual and group dental practices, with most belonging to individual practices. Many dentists closed their practices and experienced a significant drop in non-emergency procedures. Both individual and group practices reported financial losses. Dentists perceived aerosol-generating procedures as increasing the risk of Omicron infection. Tele-dentistry was not widely considered effective for recall visits. Conclusion: The Omicron variant has presented significant challenges to dentistry in India, including increased risks, financial losses, and operational difficulties. Strict adherence to infection control measures, financial support, and innovative approaches to remote dental care are essential for the dental community to navigate future pandemics effectively.
