Year: 2025
Type: article
Study design: Case Report
Abstract: Olfactory reference syndrome (ORS) is characterized by erroneous distressing beliefs of emitting a peculiar or offensive smell from the body. The prevalence of this disorder ranges from 0.5% to 2.1%. Other clinical features in response to this preoccupation include engaging in excessive and repetitive behaviors such as checking, showering, and trying to camouflage the odor. It is often misdiagnosed and may lead to significant distress and disturbance in sociooccupational functioning. Here, we report three cases of ORS with symptoms of recurring thoughts of unusual odors, repetitive behaviors, and ideas of reference. After diagnosis and treatment with antidepressants, there was an improvement in symptoms as well as social functioning.
