Effective Approaches to Translating Children's Literature: Preserving Cultural and Universal Values in Folk Tales
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The article considers the issues of translating children’s literature using the example of folk tale translation. As a genre of folklore, the folk tale is often classified as children’s literature due to its target audience. It shares a number of common features with other genres and forms of fiction but also has specific characteristics that the translator must take into account. The translator’s task is further complicated by the fact that, in addition to its entertainment function, the folk tale also serves a didactic purpose: it helps children gain knowledge about their own and other cultures, develop an understanding of specific cultural features, and foster both cultural and universal human values. In this regard, understanding the specifics of translating folk tales appears particularly relevant. The article analyzes the linguistic, cultural, structural, and other features of Russian, Kazakh, and English folk tales. The main research methods employed include comparative analysis, linguistic and stylistic analysis, and translation analysis. The authors focus in detail on several significant translation problems and examine strategies for addressing them.
