Formulation and evaluation of clitorea ternatea nanoparticles

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This study investigates the formulation and evaluation of Clitoria ternatea nanoparticles using the nanoprecipitation method to achieve sustained drug delivery. Clitoria ternatea, well known for its antidiabetic properties, contains bioactive phytochemicals that support diabetes management. The primary objective was to improve bioavailability and extend the drug release profile. Nanoparticles were prepared by dissolving the plant extract and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) in dichloromethane, followed by adding the mixture to an aqueous phase containing Span 60, with sonication applied to enhance dispersion. Four formulations (CtNF1–CtNF4) were developed by varying the PVA concentration. Characterization using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) confirmed the absence of chemical interactions, while scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed that the nanoparticles exhibited a uniform spherical morphology. Among the formulations, CtNF3 demonstrated the highest entrapment efficiency at 85% and achieved 90% drug release over 24 hours, indicating effective sustained release. Overall, CtNF3 outperformed the other formulations in terms of both encapsulation and release profiles. These results highlight the potential of Clitoria ternatea nanoparticles as a promising strategy for targeted and sustained drug delivery, offering a valuable therapeutic option, particularly for improving diabetes treatment outcomes.
