Abstract: Numerous studies have investigated the prevalence of armed banditry in Nigeria, primarily focusing on factors such as ungoverned spaces and relative deprivation. While understanding these elements is essential, there is a significant gap in academic research regarding the role of the police force in addressing this issue. This study examines several key factors that influence the police’s capacity to combat armed banditry, including the police size, funding, conditions of service and operational structure. By analysing these various aspects, the research provides a more nuanced understanding of the relationship between the quality of the police force and the prevalence of armed banditry in Nigeria.
