The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Achieving Environmental Conservation in Sub-Saharan Africa
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the study of creating computer systems that display intelligence in some way. The way societies approach environmental issues and strive for sustainable development has changed as a result of the integration of AI into a variety of disciplines. There have been public outcries, conversations, debates, and awareness campaigns on the need for environmental issues that need technologies like AI. Environmental industries into waste management, clean energy, wildlife protection, pollution control, and conservation of natural resources use it. In other words, environmental problems can be resolved to achieve environmental sustainability using AI. This paper examines the role of AI in environmental sustainability and biodiversity conservation in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The paper combines current literature on the application of AI; specifically in relation to environmental sustainability in areas like biodiversity conservation, forest protection, etc., using a mixture of qualitative and quantitative measures. The paper finds the applicability of AI to support biodiversity conservation; which is woefully lacking in SSA. The paper concludes that, in the current era beset by environmental issues that crosscut continents, applying AI is the best bet for achieving environmental sustainability.
